The new equipment will help Antalis’ Smart Packaging Centre (SPC) to design packaging with better performance values and, ultimately, less material.
Antalis Packaging has added a burst test machine and two new corrugate-testing machines at its Leicestershire-based SPC to help customers to further evaluate current or new packaging solutions.

To meet the ever-growing demand for better, stronger and more sustainable packaging, Antalis’ SPC provides customers with the opportunity to not only discuss their packaging requirements, but to also see packaging automation in action, as well as giving them opportunities to develop packaging design solutions, and create samples on site.
The new TLS Samples Crush Tester CDM-5 is capable of performing a number of different tests, including ring crush, edge crush and flat crush testing, while the new TLS VALIDATOR PLUS-50 compression testing machine tests corrugated boxes and other materials up to a pressure of 50kN.
To test all-important bursting strength, the TLS Bursting Strength Tester Mullen BT-10 enables the team to assess how much pressure a cardboard box, or other paper material, can withstand before failing.
The new additions to the SPC means Antalis now has the facility to gain accurate readings and performance parameters for a range of different values required to make a successful shipping carton.
Head of Sustainability, Innovation and Design – Packaging at Antalis, John Garner, comments: “We are able to use the data the new testing equipment provides to develop alternative material proposals for customers that offer the same or better performance values than their existing packaging. For example, we were able to redesign one customer’s corrugated boxes to use 35% less material. It’s a great result all round because, as well as offering a potential price benefit, we are significantly reducing the amount of resources required in the manufacture, distribution and storage of these products, as well as making recycling at the end of life phase easier.”
