Using the first dual-beam system installed in the US for packaging, The BoxMaker solves production bottlenecks with a Zünd D3 L-3200 with BHS.
The BoxMaker began in 1981 as a brown box plant, expanded into supplies in 1984, labels in 1990, foam in 1992, and fulfillment and copacking services in 2008. The company first purchased a wide-format digital press in 2011 and, within a few years, launched web-to-print graphic packaging with an automated digital workflow that takes full advantage of its digital printing and finishing capabilities.
A key differentiator
With the fast-growing online presence through fantastapack.com came the need for processing upwards of 200 orders per day and a cutting solution capable of keeping up. A Zünd D3 L-3200 with automatic board-handling system – BHS, was installed in mid-2016. Says Daniel Dixon, Director of Operational Excellence, “We chose the Zünd D3 for its dual-head capability, speed, and efficiency. The Zünd fully automated cutting system is critical to our ability to deliver fully custom packaging orders in days rather than in weeks, a key differentiator for us in the market.” The enhanced productivity of the dual-beam system helped solve the production bottleneck The BoxMaker was experiencing previously. “We increased throughput and made our production more cost-effective. The Zünd D3 has also opened up options to us that did not exist before. The ability to use two heads speeds up cutting time, allowing us to keep up with the ever-increasing pace of production. Our operators love the equipment,” adds Mr. Dixon.
On the cutting edge of a growing market
As digital wide-format print technology continues to make advances in the corrugated field, demand for highly productive cutting and finishing processes will continue to increase as well. The BoxMaker has already begun planning for further additions in the finishing department to keep up with the ever-growing output generated by digital print, the company’s fastest growing market segment.
