Focus is not just placed on sustainability and innovation at this year’s Packaging Innovations in Birmingham – these are also key issues at Walki, one of the leading producers of laminates and packaging solutions. The company is presenting paper- and board-based composite materials for food and non-food packaging right through to the luxury segment. Manufacturers and branded companies in the food and non-food sectors, packaging manufacturers and designers can get information at booth D46 and seek advice about individual solutions.

Intelligent protection for frozen and refrigerated foods
Thanks to the barrier solutions from Walki that are customised to suit the product, frozen or refrigerated foods such as fish, meat, vegetables and ice cream can be hygienically packaged directly in the cardboard. At the trade fair, the company is presenting coated board qualities from the Walki Pack Frost and Walki Pack Chill range, which as primary packaging make it possible to do without additional materials. “In this way, the amount of packaging is reduced for the good of the environment and economic efficiency, and the product is optimally protected at the same time”, explains Stefan Erdmann, Technical Service & Development Manager Barrier Board at Walki. Walki has developed a special tear strip for practical opening and reclosing. With a completely intact barrier surface without perforation, the folding box can be cleanly and accurately opened at the specified position. This results in two packaging parts, which can be easily closed again through lateral folding and fitting back together, a clear benefit for the consumer.
Aluminium-free peel-off lid with no tearing
As the leading manufacturer of flexible paper-based lids, Walki is also presenting its diverse range of products for single-serve foods such as yogurt, cream cheese or instant soups. Walki lids are sustainable because they are aluminium-free and based on renewable and recyclable raw materials. The innovative lid materials have excellent printing quality, ensure safe transport of the food thanks to their strength and resistance to tearing, and can be peeled off without damage.
Packaging luxury articles attractively and sustainably
Cosmetic and perfumes, fine confectionery, exclusive spirits or tobacco require high-quality packaging and finishings. Sustainable packaging has a special competitive advantage in those areas where striking designs are made at the expense of the environment in terms of manufacturing and recycling. Walki is presenting metallised board grades from the Walki Pack Transfer range at Packaging Innovations. They consist of board, water-based glue and a small amount of aluminium dust and contain no PET or other plastic components. “The result is just as smooth and glossy as similar conventional products, while being conventionally printable to a high degree as well as much more sustainable”, says Stefan Erdmann.
