Energy project "Future Energy Plant" in the home stretch
The commissioning of the ultra-modern boiler is a milestone in the course of the largest project in the history of the Nettingsdorf paper mill with an investment sum of around 134 million euros. With the innovative new boiler, the paper mill can further advance energy optimization at the site - a major contribution to increasing the sustainability and efficiency of the leading producer of corrugated base paper.

The construction project, which started on 26 September 2018, is now entering its final decisive phase. A ceremony for the official opening of the entire new plant is planned for October 2020.
"With the commissioning of the new lye combustion boiler, we have taken a very important step towards sustainability and efficient use of energy and raw materials. The commissioning is a great moment for all employees here at the Nettingsdorf site," says Günter Hochrathner, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Nettingsdorf, delighted with the smooth start of the boiler.
By now recovering energy even more efficiently from the pulp production biomass contained in black liquor, the new boiler is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 40,000 tons, which is about two thirds of the current emissions at the site, and 2.4% of Smurfit Kappa Europe's emissions.
In addition to the new boiler, the "Future Energy Plant" project includes the start-up of an advanced new steam turbine and several other projects, including an improved water treatment system and the installation of additional drying cylinders for the paper machine.
The Future Energy Plant project is part of an ongoing investment program by Smurfit Kappa Group to implement a number of transformative, sustainable innovations. Efficient energy plants play an important role in paper production throughout Europe. "With the investment at the Nettingsdorf site, we can ensure a long-term high-quality and sustainable supply of corrugated base paper," concludes Günter Hochrathner, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Nettingsdorf.
