The plastic-free eco-barrier board MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB is certified by DIN CERTCO for industrial and non-industrial compostability. The industrial certification has been granted according to DIN EN 13432 and ASTM D6400, the non-industrial certification according to NF T 51-800. The eco-barrier board is manufactured by Metsä Board, the leading European producer of lightweight premium board and a member of the Metsä Group.

Helena Moring-Vepsäläinen, Product Safety Manager at Metsä Board, explains: "There is a growing demand among brand manufacturers for new, more environmentally friendly solutions for food and foodservice packaging that is made from renewable materials without plastic and can be recycled or composted after use. MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB has now been certified according to international compostability standards. This makes it easier for our customers to choose a packaging material that they know will reliably meet their various disposal requirements".
The European standard DIN EN 13432 contains the "Requirements for the recovery of packaging by composting and biodegradation". The US American standard ASTM D 6400 regulates the marking of plastics for aerobic composting in municipal or industrial plants. The non-industrial compostability is in accordance with the French standard NF T 51-800 (specifications for home compostable plastics), which can also be applied to other materials, including cardboard.
MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB is made from pure virgin fibre from sustainably managed forests in Northern Europe. The board quality is safe for direct food contact and free from optical brighteners and fluorochemicals. As it is plastic free, it does not require plastic separation and is therefore easy and cost effective to recycle. Like all Metsä Board grades, it is lightweight and therefore contributes to reducing the carbon footprint throughout the supply chain.
