Extended capacity in East Java and sustainability achievement advance Clariant's leadership in edible oils purification

Tonsil® bentonite purification solution highlighted for hard-to-bleach palm oil and mitigation of 3MCPD and GE
Complete oil bleaching knowhow will be highlighted during the PIPOC exhibition

Clariant will take part in the biennial MPOB International Palm Oil Congress and Exhibition (PIPOC) held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center on November 19-21, 2019. At the event organized by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Clariant will demonstrate its strong knowhow on overcoming some of the toughest bleaching challenges in palm oil purification leveraging its natural bentonite derived Tonsil – a highly active bleaching earth. Clariant’s mitigation strategies on reduction of 3MCPD and GE, together with its extended capacity in the region and global sustainability achievement are why Clariant remains as one of the leading companies in edible oils purification.

Raw, untreated vegetable oils extracted from seeds and fruit of oil-rich plants come in naturally with a lot of undesired sustances and impurities that may compromise the quality and appearance of the edible oils. Therefore, they need to go through a purification process in order to give them a longer storage life, improved heat resistance and neutral taste and color. In the field of edible oil purification, Clariant’s Tonsil bleaching earths are involved in the purification of more than one third of the world’s total annual production of oils and fats, making the company a global leader in the field.

Tonsil is widely used in the purification of edible oil to get rid of undesired substances like gums, dyestuffs, peroxides, heavy metals, and residues of crop protectants. As bleaching earths formed by acidic activation of the raw material bentonite, Tonsil is deployed in pre-treatment and dry washing of edible oils with remarkable strength in the reduction of 3MCPD precursor and removal of GE.

For the otherwise difficult-to-bleach palm oils, Tonsil is particularly functional with its ability to remove chlorophyll and carotene during the deodorization step in the bleaching process to give the oil product a desirable color and improved shelf life.

“Clariant’s Tonsil bleaching earths have now been in use for more than 100 years with customers worldwide enjoying the improved total cost ownership offered by the product that has been widely recognized as the gold standard for efficient and sustainable purification of oil and fat. At PIPOC, we want our customers in the South East Asia & Pacific region to learn how we could partner with them to refine a better future together through local supply of Tonsil from our four sites in the region,” says Gustavo Rodriguez, Clariant’s Head of Absorbents SEAP, BU Functional Minerals.

In order to satisfy growing demand from customers in the region, the Tonsil product is now available from four Clariant sites in the South East Asia & Pacific region, that include Medan, Cimapag, Cileungsi and Surabaya.

As a 100% natural product, Tonsil makes an important contribution to healthy nutrition by maintaining the good harmony with nature through removing unwanted substances but protecting nutrients. Under Clariant’s re-cultivation strategy in co-ordination with land owners and government bodies, mines for bentonite are returned to the land owner with a higher level of biodiversity than before extracting bentonite.

Along this direction for driving sustainability, Clariant has been offering many valuable products and solutions that advocate sustainability through innovation in specialty chemistry. Such efforts and dedication have won the company listing in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for seven consecutive years, making Clariant one of the most sustainable chemical companies in the world today.
