Diabetes patients who are dependent on insulin for life have to supply themselves with the vital medication via insulin pumps, syringes or pens. For this purpose and for other multi-dose therapies, Ypsomed offers the disposable pen "UnoPen™" with variable dosage setting. Schreiner MediPharm has developed an NFC label for this injection aid, which serves as a communication interface between the injector and SmartPilot™ - an electronic supplement to the pen. The resulting smart device interactively supports patients during the use of the pen and helps them to adhere to their therapy plan.

The label with integrated NFC chip developed by Schreiner MediPharm was designed to fit perfectly with the combination of UnoPen™ and SmartPilot™. With the NFC label, the medication can be automatically identified, authenticated and checked for shelf life. With the help of the smart device, the injection date, injection time and dispensed amount are tracked and transmitted via Bluetooth to the patient's smartphone app. The patient is interactively guided through the injection process, supported in the correct use of the pen in real time or informed about discrepancies - for example in the case of deviations from the therapy plan or before an accidental double injection. Also integrated is a temperature monitoring system that issues a warning if the pen has been exposed to critical temperatures during use and storage. This is possible with a sensor technology built into the SmartPilot™, which digitally networks the UnoPen™. The smart device is simply placed on the pen without covering the cap, the dose scaling mechanism or the button that triggers the injection. The device remains on the pen during the entire injection process.
Schreiner MediPharm and Ypsomed were already development partners for the SmartPilot™ application for the YpsoMate® auto-injector: "We have again decided on a development cooperation with Schreiner MediPharm in order to offer pharmaceutical customers the optimal combination of "connected device" and smart NFC label, says Andreas Schneider, Innovation & Business Development Director at Ypsomed. The narrow radius of the pen and the low tolerances of the attached device were particularly challenging this time. A major focus was on machine processing, as the NFC chip integrated into the label must function reliably from production to the end application. Schreiner MediPharm uses a special design to ensure this.
