Sophisticated label substrates have experienced exponential growth due to demand for high-end applications according FINAT’s latest findings.

Since 2010 demand for PP-based materials has grown 78%, direct thermal papers are up 51% and white coated papers enjoyed a 24% increase. The figures show that while paper based materials continue to dominate label materials demand, there has been a shift from basic primary and VIP labels towards more sophisticated, high-end applications.

A unique new market update event from AWA
The manufacturing efficiency of in-mold labeling, decoration, and production has in recent years expanded the technology’s adoption into major current manufacturing arenas. In parallel with these new industry developments, AWA Alexander Watson Associates have extended the brief for their annual conference on in-mold labeling to embrace two lively additional in-mold markets: in-mold decoration, and – uniquely -- electronics applications. This new event, AWA IMLCON™, IMDCON™, and IMECON™, will be held in Amsterdam, 10-11 September, and will enable industry participants at all levels, and others interested in exploring the possibilities, to gain an expert update on three major pathways in in-mold manufacturing today.

Carbon Black is utilized as a filler in tires and numerous other products made of rubber. In plastics, printing inks, paints, and coatings, carbon black is used as a black pigment. Ceresana examined the global carbon black market already for the third time. “We expect a positive development of demand until 2025”, says Oliver Kutsch, CEO of the market research company: “Then, total consumption is likely to amount to over 15 million tonnes of carbon black.”

Polyurethanes (PUR) are plastics resulting from a polyadditional reaction of polyisocyanates with polyols and are either hard and porous or soft and elastic depending on its production. Different kinds of PUR are needed for reactive, thermally activated, hot melt, dispersion, and solvent-borne adhesives. These adhesives are for example used to bond car front spoilers, sandwich constructions, and facade elements, to glue metal brackets, or to seal electronic casings. PUR Sealants are particularly utilized in the transport industry as well as in the construction industry for window joints, and sealing of windows, pipes, and more. The market research company Ceresana analyzed the global market for adhesives and sealants based on PUR in detail. Until 2024, Ceresana expects an increase in revenues generated with these products to over USD 9.7 billion. Adhesives and sealants based on other products are NOT included in this study.

PET beverage bottles already meet the key requirements in the current debate on plastic recycling. Germany’s firmly established recycling system from manufacturing to recycling PET bottles has played a decisive role, placing the German PET market ahead of the EU plastic strategy just published. This eliminates the issue of export restrictions applicable to plastic waste via China in PET bottle disposal.
